Libby

Texas recently passed the bathroom bill act which requires people to use the restroom which their birth certificate says rather than which gender they feel.

Since the passing of the bathroom bill people have already been responding and protesting this bill. More specifically a seven year old transgender, named Libby wrote a letter to her school explaining her fears with this new act. Libby feels her safety is being jeopardized and demands a change. This child is one of the many outraged about this act showing the bill will definitely continue to be a hot topic. While others have proven to be remaining adamant about birth certificate gender defining which restroom a person uses.

Libby’s parents feel very strongly about fighting this act and will continue to try and allow their child to use the bathroom she desires. Seven year old Libby is now acting as a strong activist against this bathroom issue.

Libby is a prime example how transgender, and their families are reacting across Texas. The bathroom bill will surely remain up for debate.

These are some essentials you want to get when you go back to school.

Electronic essentials

Buying electronics doesn’t have to be costly or stressful and here are some affordable back to school needs that you can find in the electronics aisle. First headphones, these are important for some alone study time, when you have some free time and want to wind down by listening to music, or passing time when walking from class to class. A good inexpensive pair of headphones aren't hard to come by and are available at Target for only $9.99. Another essential item for the school year is a portable charger. Let's face it, although we aren't supposed to use our phones during school we do. Don't let a dead phone put extra stress that you don’t need, or restrict internet access during school. Invest in a good portable charger, Walmart has a portable charger for only $8.55. Another electronic essential is a USB, although useful it's often overlooked. A USB is important to save those important essay, project, or documents. Even if you already have a USB it’s good to start the year with a fresh one that has plenty of storage and doesn’t contain unnecessary items that are no longer need from the previous school year. You can find a USB drive at any office supplies store, but Target has a few starting at a low price of $9.99.

Lunch Wear

Packing lunch and bringing something to drink during school is very important, it can save money from buying lunch, water, or coffee at school. A thermos is really useful to keep drinks cool/hot. Thermos are a good way to stay hydrated or caffeinated, whether you want to bring water, or coffee a thermal is definitely necessary. You can find thermos practically anywhere and Target has some really cute ones ranging from $3-15. Another thing to pack with you is a good food storage container. Target has the perfect food storage container for the low price of  $13.49. Another important item for lunch is a lunch bag. Although this is obvious it’s critical to get a thermal lunch bag. A thermos lunch bag can help store your food and not mix it with your papers or get your backpack messy. If you have a thermos lunch bag it will really help maintain freshness of food. A good lunch bag should be easily accessed and be able to fit inside your backpack without taking up too much space but it should also have a lot of space for your you lunch. It doesn’t hurt if the thermos lunch bag has a nice pattern on it too! Walmart has some nice thermos lunch boxes that are very spacious for $8.99.

Snacks

Whether you forgot breakfast, or simply need something to hold you over til lunch, small snacks are something that should be kept in your backpack. Some good healthy snack to take on the go are:  gum, cliff bars, crackers, and sliced apples. A few snacks to keep in a backpack can be a lifesaver. Make sure to never let an empty stomach affect your school work and keep some snack with you this school year.

Calendar

A calendar is important to mark those important dates, it’s different from a planner because everything is laid out for the month instead of the week. This helps you maintain a good schedule and to not forget about any important dates. They are extremely helpful for the disorganized or the busy body by managing time or making time for football games, etc. This often isn’t thought of to buy, but can really help for a more organized school year and more effective planning.

The Emoji Movie poster Sony Animation Pictures. Emoji Movie Poster. IMBD, www.imdb.com/title/tt4877122/.

Scoring only 7% on Rotten Tomatoes, critics have claimed this to be one of the worst animated movies to date that attempts to have a good message, but fails. Despite reviews about this movie, is it really okay to take your children to see?

Here’s what you need to know, first off, the emoji movie isn’t terrible. It is definitely tolerable however, there are some jokes that definitely shouldn’t be in a kids movie. The raunchy humor is tasteless, as well as the other child-friendly humor in the movie. The movie definitely lacks depth and is a bit unwatchable at times. It fails to send its intended message, and seems to lack focus over the matter while trying to simply be bold and tease humanities use of phones. Although this movie tries to attempt to make sense of the constant need to use our phones, it just comes off as unfunny and dull. The characters in the movie don’t send a bad message, but they don’t necessarily send a good one either.

The emoji movie focuses on the journey of “Meh” a malfunction emoji trying not to get deleted. The Emoji Movie includes “Meh’s”  journey to “the cloud”, it attempts to be a journey of friendship, family, love, and self-acceptance. While going through this journey he meets many emoji friends and gains his family's support.

So the question is whether or not you should take your children to watch this social media influenced emoji movie? I say not to, there are a lot of jokes that shouldn't be in a PG rated film, and it’s honestly a waste of time. Your children will not take away a good message from seeing this film and it’s not fun to watch. Rather than spending your money on the emoji movie, spend it seeing another children's film with an actual positive message.

On Friday, July 21, The Texas Senate Committee met in Austin to conduct a bathroom bill hearing. A bill dealing with whether a person should use the bathroom that identifies with their gender, or with the gender they were born with. It was a  lengthy hearing, lasting nearly  11 hours, with a large turnout of people displaying their views on the matter. This was the third  hearing on the bathroom bill issue in Texas. The bathroom bill has been heavily debated over the past few years, evident in the 250 people showing up to protest this bill. Although Many people gathered to testify on the subject, the hearing ultimately ended with 8-1 vote favoring to pass the ‘bathroom bill’. Senate 3 was signed off on, which requires in public school, or government official building to have a restricted bathroom that doesn’t have to follow a person's gender identity, but the gender on their birth certificate. Texas is now following North Carolina example on their bathroom bill policy. Many are angered over this decision and feel their rights are being violated, while others fear the possibility of what could happen without homogenous bathroom. This issue has proven to be costly, time consuming , and a very sensitive subject. This debate has parties extremely divided and seems it will not go away soon. As bathroom issues increase in relevance, it seems as if the issue is not going away anytime soon and there will be more heard on this subject.

Big Tex

A restaurant menu composed entirely of grilled cheese? It may sound crazy, but Cheezies is a Frisco restaurant that offers a new dining experience, serving items that only contain cheese. Their menu primarily contains grilled cheese, but also mac and cheese, and salads. Cheezies is a family operated business that has a high emphasis on cheese.

I tried the Big Tex grilled cheese. The sandwich alone cost 6.99, and the combo costed 8.99. The Big Tex contains: brisket, jalapeno cheddar bread, aged white cheddar, and onions marmalade. My Big Tex came pretty standard, in a basket containing the fries and also a side of pickles. Although it was simple, it was well fitted for the restaurant.

The grilled cheese itself was very crispy, it seemed as if they had cooked it for a while. Having jalapeno cheddar bread added some spice. The bread of the grilled cheese was very soft and very easy to eat, and the jalapeno in the bread added some spice to the sandwich. The brisket was cooked to perfection as it was bursting with tenderness and flavor. The white cheddar cheese tied it all together and gave the well anticipated burst of cheese I expected. All combined, this sandwich left an unforgettable taste in my mouth.

The side of pickles at first confused me, I wondered why there was a side of pickles in the basket. Alone the pickles are incredible with an amazing seasoning to top them off, and are unlike any pickles I’ve had before. They aren’t very sour like your typical average pickles. Combined with the grilled cheese the pickles offer a burst of freshness, and add a stronger, different texture to the sandwich. Cheezies claims it will “soon be famous for its pickles”.

The fries were very crisp and didn't have much salt. They were very thick as well and offered the grilled cheese a good accent. The texture was most memorable, biting into them offered me a sensational crispy taste that made me want to come back for more.

My service was also outstanding as an employee came out multiple times to make sure I was enjoying my meal, despite it being a “self serve’ restaurant. While there, I enjoyed good music and friendly people. It seemed as though all the employees were happy to be there, and all customers were having a good experience while dining.

Overall my dining experience was exceptional, Cheezies offers a cool new way to enjoy food compared to any other restaurant. I would recommend Cheezies grilled cheese and fries, and their red velvet dessert cookies any day!

Local Carrollton Italian restaurant changes how we view your typical local business. Joe’s pizza opened 28 years ago as a pizzeria. Carolyn, the current owner, was once an enthusiastic customer, who visited the restaurant everyday after school. Little did she know that she would become the future owner of Joe’s. Originally, Carolyn bought Joe’s 16 years ago for her son, but has continued to run it to this day. Saying Joe's Pizza is involved in the community is an understatement. The local eatery donates baby supplies to teen mothers, provides coupons to underprivileged families for Joe’s, and helps veterans. They were the first in Carrollton to open a kitchen for those in need. Joe’s holds an annual thanksgiving kitchen for the homeless giving them a hot meal in their time of need. Inspired by the restaurant's ability to provide aid to the community, Carolyn is determined to open a proper soup kitchen in the future. Joe’s pizza not only helps the community, but also has delicious food. Their New-York style pizza is marvelous and very fresh. Joe’s pizza has good food, and their staff is amazing. The owner knows all her customers very well and makes sure they have a pleasant experience at Joe’s, exemplifying Carolyn’s caring attitude about her restaurant. Joe’s not only provides good food, but helps Carrollton tremulously, go check out Joe’s for yourself today.
