Back to School Means Fresh Starts – And Immunizations!
As the new school year approaches, Carrollton Regional Medical Center (CRMC) reminds families in our community now is the perfect time to ensure students are up to date on their immunizations. Staying current not only meets Texas school requirements – it’s a key safeguard for the health of our children, their classmates and the wider community.
Vaccine-preventable diseases still pose real threats. When vaccination rates go down, we start to see outbreaks of illnesses like measles, mumps, and whooping cough. Local health experts say skipping important booster shots – like Tdap or the meningococcal vaccine – can be a big risk, especially for older students and those heading off to college. Plus, with flu season around the corner, annual flu shots are a must to reduce illness and time away from class.
In Texas, kids are required to have certain vaccines before they can start school. For kindergarteners, that includes shots like DTaP, polio, MMR, hepatitis A and B, and chickenpox. Older students need to get their Tdap and meningococcal vaccines before heading into middle school or college.
CRMC proudly supports student and family health by offering immunizations in a patient-friendly environment. Flu and COVID-19 vaccines are available by appointment.
What to bring to your appointment
- Immunization record: Your child’s current vaccine history is essential.
- Insurance card: Many vaccines are covered through Medicaid, CHIP, or private insurance; Texas VFC clinics often offer low-cost options for qualified families.
- Identification and consent forms (when required by school districts).
